Conor McGregor: A new Irish Sporting Hero?

For those who have never heard of Conor McGregor, where have you been for the last couple of months? The new UFC star from Dublin has taken the internet by storm through his entertaining thrash talk towards his competitors and his unique fashion sense. Many Irish internet forums and news websites like Joe.ie have been raving about the 26 year old since he defeated Diego Brandao in July. The fighter has been hyped up to be the next big thing in the ultimate fighting championship organisation, and so far, he has certainly lived up to it.

He has won all three of his fights so far since joining the UFC, the biggest organisation in the sport of Mixed martial arts. His last fight against Brandao was a first round knockout, which he predicted before the fight even happened. This was his first fight since returning from an ACL injury that he received in his previous fight, which he also won. This shows how tough he is physically and mentally and it seems it will take an extremely talented and hard opponent to beat him in the future.

His crude manner of speaking has caused many to debate whether he is extremely arrogant or just very sure of his abilities. whatever the answer, no one can question how entertaining the Dublin man is. His mixture of funny quips and inspirational quotes has attracted many new fans to the sport of mixed martial arts, especially in Ireland, where before the sport had a very small market to appeal to.Quotes about his style and how “These custom made suits aren't cheap. This solid gold pocket watch? Three people died making this watch, you know what I mean?” is an entertaining alternative to the usual serious answers that are given by many other UFC fighters, which makes him stand out from the rest of his weight division (featherweight).Hes not all jokes though, His answers to questions from the media also include quotes which highlights his determination to be the best. Quotes like “I fear no man. If you breathe oxygen, I do not fear you.” or “I don’t give a shit about getting 3 rounds in. I do 300 rounds a week.”

Whether you are a fan of him or not, it cannot be questioned the impact he has had on the media in Ireland. Coming up to his last fight he was on the late late show as well as doing many interviews on the radio. He has brought the sport of mixed martial arts to the ordinary Irish punter, and he hopes to continue bringing the sport into the national media spotlight. He talks about one day headlining a UFC event in the Aviva stadium. This seems like it could happen sooner than later due to the ever growing attention he is bringing to the UFC.

The question still remains though, is McGregor the next Irish sporting hero? can he be named alongside people like Brian O Driscoll or Katie Taylor? This remains to be seen and only time will tell. In my view however, he is well on his way to that pedestal. This suit wearing, thrash taking Dublin fighter will soon be a star to the Irish public, and to some he already is. There is pressure on him for his next fight against Dustin Poirier in the event UFC 178 in Las Vegas on September 27th. It will be interesting to see how he will do after all his talk about Poirier already, Behind all the talk however, there is a focused and extremely tough Irishman ready to take his chance on the big stage, and I really hope he does.
